Thanks everyone. Some great suggestions but it looks like a toss up between Rye and Woburn as it seems there's a little more going on there than some of the other places.

As forever said.

Go Woburn!

Leave London around 09.00, get to Woburn for around 10.30. Spend some time walking around Woburn Abbey.

Go to lunch in the Black Horse, great food and relatively inexpensive.

You could try The William Bray at Shere. That's a lovely little village, has been used in tons of films.

Bill - Dungeness has a proper weird feel about it.
Rye is becoming more arty as well.
Will be exploring around here more and also lots of England this year.

Tenterden is a typical posh market / boutique shop town but then you have Rye for your artisan stuff and Dungeness etc for total desperate / bleak stuff if photography is your thing.

It's an area of extreme wealth and poverty (Hastings) in a relatively small circumference
